Wifredo Lam is an artist whose paintings cannot be authenticated on technical grounds alone. The reason is that Lam’s paintings don’t display exceptional painting skills. Numerous artists paint just as well as Wifredo Lam and can produce something that is at the same technical level.
There are some advanced technical analytical methods that can be applied but for the most part authenticating a Wifredo Lam also requires provenance research, preferably, or finding information about the origin or history of the painting to support that it is authentic.
For a painting a minimum of thirty days is required for authentication of a Lam and in some cases longer.
